Volume Converter

Convert liquid volumes for recipes, fuel, drinks and containers. Many volume units share a name but differ in size between the US and the UK, so each one is labeled explicitly.

US customary vs UK imperial

A US gallon is 3.785 liters; an imperial (UK) gallon is 4.546 liters, about 20% more. The same split applies to quarts, pints and fluid ounces. A US pint is 473 mL, while a British pint is 568 mL.

If a recipe or label comes from the United States, use the US units. For older British recipes and UK fuel economy figures, use the imperial units.

About the units

Milliliter (mL)
A milliliter is one thousandth of a liter and is exactly the same as one cubic centimeter (cm³ or cc). Medicine doses, drink cans and cosmetics are labeled in milliliters.
Liter (L)
A liter is the volume of a cube 10 cm on each side (one cubic decimeter). It is not an SI unit, but it is accepted for use with SI and is the everyday unit for drinks and fuel almost everywhere.
Cubic meter (m³)
A cubic meter equals 1,000 liters. Water bills, concrete, gas usage and shipping volumes are commonly measured in cubic meters.
Metric cup (cup)
The metric cup is 250 mL. Recipes from Australia, New Zealand and Canada often use it, and it is about 6% larger than a US customary cup.
US fluid ounce (US fl oz)
The US fluid ounce is 1/128 of a US gallon, about 29.57 mL. US nutrition labels round it to 30 mL. It is roughly 4% larger than the imperial fluid ounce.
US cup (US cup)
The US customary cup is 8 US fluid ounces, about 236.6 mL. US nutrition labels use a slightly different "legal cup" of exactly 240 mL.
US pint (US pt)
The US liquid pint is 16 US fluid ounces, about 473.2 mL. It is noticeably smaller than the 568 mL imperial pint served in British pubs.
US quart (US qt)
The US liquid quart is 2 US pints or a quarter of a US gallon, about 0.946 liters.
US gallon (US gal)
The US gallon is defined as exactly 231 cubic inches, which is 3.785411784 liters. It is the unit for fuel prices and fuel economy (miles per gallon) in the United States.
Imperial fluid ounce (UK fl oz)
The imperial fluid ounce is 1/160 of an imperial gallon, exactly 28.4130625 mL. It is used in the UK, mostly on older recipes and some drink labels.
Imperial pint (UK pt)
The imperial pint is 20 imperial fluid ounces, exactly 568.26125 mL. Beer and cider in UK pubs and milk in the UK are still sold by the pint.
Imperial quart (UK qt)
The imperial quart is 2 imperial pints, about 1.137 liters.
Imperial gallon (UK gal)
The imperial gallon is defined as exactly 4.54609 liters, about 20% larger than the US gallon. UK fuel economy figures in miles per gallon use the imperial gallon.

Frequently asked questions

Which gallon does this converter use?

Both. Pick "US gallon" or "Imperial gallon" from the unit list. Pages titled simply “gallons” use the US gallon and say so.

Is a milliliter the same as a cubic centimeter?

Yes. 1 mL = 1 cm³ exactly, which is why medical doses are sometimes written as cc.
